Undergraduate Research Application Process

Kate presents her research to Dr. Hamilton in Undergraduate Research Day 2014

Students are invited to engage in research, scholarship, and creative activity with faculty mentors through Undergraduate Research, for which they may receive academic credit. It is the aim of the program to: involve students in their own learning, develop teamwork and pride, enhance interdisciplinary learning, and share in the exhilaration of discovery.

The Application Process consists of a completed application form including description of research, bibliography, presentation/publication outlets, letters of support, and budget if applicable.

Step 1. Student and faculty mentor design a research project. Projects using human or animal subjects MUST be reviewed and approved by the Human and Animal Subjects Research Committee (HASRC) prior to submission to the office of UR.

Step 2. Student prepares research proposal by completing application. Student may request funds to support research project through the submission of a detailed budget.

Step 3. Approval of undergraduate research projects rests with the Department Chairs. Students must include a statement of approval from the department chair.

Step 4. Student registers for UR 100, 200, 300, or 400 for 3-6 hours of credit or an appropriate discipline specific course agreed upon with the faculty mentor and pays tuition and applicable fees.

Step 5. Students should download the application, complete the application and email the application to their research advisor.  The advisor will then add their statement of support for the project and then forward the document to the departmental chair for approval. After these steps are completed, the completed application in pdf format can be sent to URProgram@orkexpo.net with the email subject “UR Application”. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to ask.  Questions can be emailed to Dr. Cindy Tidwell at URProgram@orkexpo.net or Ms. Tonja Battle at battletl@orkexpo.net.

UR Project funding available:

Limited funds, not to exceed $250 per student, may be provided for expenses associated with the student’s project.
