ABOUT
The Black Alumni Club (formerly the Minority Alumni Club) seeks to reconnect black alumni with the UMNAA, provide mentorship for current students and young alumni, and recognize alumni for their achievements.
Lonnie Edwards Distinguished Minority Alumni Award
In 2017, the club began the Lonnie Edwards Distinguished Minority Alumni Award, named in honor of UM alum Dr. Lonnie J. Edwards Sr. ’71, who came to UM in 1969 as the University’s first African American male athlete. His impressive accomplishments on the court later inducted him into the UM Athletic Hall of Fame in 1992. In 2004, after 34 years, Dr. Edwards retired from the DeKalb County School in Georgia, having progressed from a classroom teacher to an assistant superintendent. He now serves as the president of Edwards & Associates, Inc., an educational consulting firm.
Recipients:
- 2017 – Tracey Morant Adams ’88
- 2018 – Hon. Rodger Smitherman ’76
- 2019 – Connie Harris ’77
Events held by the Black Alumni Club often raise funds for the Rodger Smitherman Minority Book Scholarship. Please check back for future events! If you would like to help with the planning of future events, please contact the Alumni Office.
Please also consider a designated donation to the Smitherman Book Scholarship or the MADE Program.
